SHARK |

Also in the news recently: the Cornwall Wildlife
Trust is asking for volunteers to help record sightings of basking
sharks (photo) off Cornwall.
IT'S A BIG 'UN: the basking shark is the second largest fish in the world, after the whale shark. DOESN'T EAT HUMANS: it's a filter feeder, which means it feeds only on plankton, so is usually harmless. INTERESTING BUT SAD: sharks attack fewer than 100 people worldwide every year, but humans kill over 100 million sharks every year. There's a big demand for shark fins, flesh and organs. As a result, large sharks are at risk of extinction. [ Frank | 1 August 2008 ] |
