10 Hot Tips
adapted from Grandmaster Daniel King's book How to Win at Chess

You don't have to follow these tips slavishly, but in general it is wise to follow them.

THE OPENING GAME

Tip 1 Begin by moving a centre pawn
Tip 2 Don't move the same piece twice: bring out your other pieces (knights, bishops, then rooks and queen)
Tip 3 Castle quickly

THE MIDDLE GAME

Tip 4 Try to capture enemy pieces
Tip 5 Study your opponent's last move carefully: what are they up to?
Tip 6: Look out for tactics you can use, such as forks, pins, skewers, discovered attacks, double attacks and trapping enemy pieces
Tip 7 Target the enemy king - go for a checkmate

THE END GAME

Tip 8 Make a new aueen
Tip 9 Use your king to capture enemy pieces and to push the other king back
Tip 10 Use your knowledge of basic checkmates to win the game. AVOID STALEMATE!
