a general model of electromagnetic radiation

Diagram showing how radiatin can be reflected, transmitted or absorbedAn object can affect another object that is some distance away from it using electromagnetic radiation. The flow chart summarises how this happens.

For example, think about looking at a lamp through a window:

  • The lamp is the source of radiation (the visible light).
  • The light travels through the air and glass to your eyes.
  • Some of it is absorbed by the air and glass, and some is reflected off the surface of the glass.
  • Your eyes are the detector. They absorb light and transmit signals to the brain.
